Places to visit in Mallorca
The best quality of Mallorca is that is has city, beach, mountain and countryside all within very close proximity to you no matter where you are on the island. Deciding what places to visit in Mallorca can be difficult as there are so many beautiful places to stay. Even though to cross the island takes about an hour and a half, using just one location, if it is not very central does make for a lot of traveling back and forth if you really want to discover all of the island. To the west you will find the Tramuntana Mountain range that runs from the south west up to the north-west corners of Mallorca with rocky coves and Calas along the coast. And to the east the terrain much flatter, here you will find longer sandier beaches with many more villages along the way. The main city, Palama is in the south-west corner of the island. The old town is vibrant and beautiful so you should spend some time here. There are several great hotels in old town and of course a few private apartments with terraces overlooking the port too for short term rentals.
I personally prefer the mountain side of the island. La Residencia in Deia or Son Net just 20 minutes outside of Palma would be my recommendation for lush living. Deia is a village on the west coast perched on the side of the mountains. There are no sandy beaches but the panoramic views overlooking the pool of the mountains spilling into the sea is absolutely magical. The energy, quality of light, and beauty of the environment sets its self apart from the rest of all of Spain. With that said there are more beautiful places to visit in Mallorca. Toward the north just outside of Soller is Fornalutx. A little village where all of the building are made of local stone. Less lux but no less lush. This corner of the island is a bit more casual and truly feels as if you are away from everything.
Across the island closer to the north east corner you will find Arta. A small town that has a few festivals during the summer that attract quit a few people. Its a good spot to make base as there are many great calls and beaches to visit just within 20 minutes of town.
My recommendations for places to visit in Mallorca are: Deia, Soller, Palma de Mallorca, Fornalutx. More more information on best beaches on the island you can read my article on the best beaches in Spain here.
