I love travel, I love experiencing new places, and I love getting inside a city as if I was a local, but I do not always love being a tourist. Going to a new country or city can have it challenges especially if you do not know anyone in your destination. There are all kinds of little details that can really contribute to making or breaking a great trip. One of those details in timing! What time to go to dinner, what time to go to the club or when to go see what you want to see! Summer is peak season in Spain and Barcelona is no exception. If you want to avoid this overcrowded attractions you need to consider some advance planning or at least do a little research before you go. As you can see in my photo taken at Güell Park in Barcelona, it is a major tourist destination. Every cruise ship and tour operator makes this park a primary stop and each group is no less than 25 people. My travel companion and I ended up getting out the door a little later than anticipated that morning and arrived to the park when it wasn’t too crazy. But by half way through our stroll it was evident we would not escape the tide of Russian photo posers and excursion groups from camps for hyperactive children. It was impossible to relax and enjoy the view.
Many people do not want to have a plan, they want to be spontaneous, adventurous, fly by the seat of their pants. That’s great, but lets talk again after you have been waiting in line at the Sagrada Familia for two hours in 95 degree heat. Many attraction like the Sagrada Familia offer pre purchased tickets online or you can purchase them at ATM machines like La Caixa. Just put your card in, choose your site or event and that’s it…no waiting in line. Jump to the front like a VIP.
My suggestion for going to the park: be at the gate when it opens in the morning at 10am.
Suggestion for the Sagrada Familia: buy tickets in advance and go mid day or afternoon. Everyone seems to start here in the morning!
